Do your current experiences tend to confirm what you already know? Or, do you seek experiences that challenge you to see a new or different perspective?
Although we grow more experienced as we grow older, it’s also quite typical that we grow more fixed in our beliefs. When this happens, our lives and careers tend to settle into rather predictable patterns that reaffirm our current knowledge and preferences. This tendency also explains how people who were once visionary and adventuresome often become quite comfortable and narrow-minded.
While some “experts” insist on explaining the world as they have studied and analyzed it, the great masters see the world fresh each day from the perspective of a novice or a child. This emphasis on cultivating a beginner’s mind helps attract new and different conversations, lessons and experiences that, in turn, lead to new and different life and career opportunities, challenges and relationships.
Today is the fifty-first day of the year. If you expect to experience something new or different this year, be sure to welcome new and different perspectives and experiences.
